Why green algae can change our inner world

” No matter how politely one says it, we owe our existence to the farts of blue-green algae. “

Green algae may be small, but it has big potential to increase overall health while protecting the ocean. I have always felt conflicted about eating fish. For health reasons, and because – as a Marine Biologist – I have always known more about the status of our oceans than most. Hence, I felt always hesitant to swallow omega-3 pills from fish oil for personal health benefits. If you are daring enough to change the world, read on to find out why.

The most shocking report was released in 2006 when scientists revealed that if current over-fishing and pollution patterns continue, we can expect to see a complete collapse of the world’s fish stock by 2048. I can barely imagine how such a world would look like and I wonder if anyone can.

Additionally, scientists have found proof around the world that our oceans are increasingly intoxicated with a range of chemicals and micro plastic, which is plastic that has broken down into smaller pieces. Even scarier: the ocean’s mercury levels have risen about 30% within the last 20 years. The fish that lands on your plate or in the fish oil capsule you may have swallowed this morning, most likely is not as healthy as you may think. Studies detected unsafe levels of environmental contaminants like pesticides DDT and Dieldrin and micro-plastic in the form of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in both fish and unpurified fish oil supplements. Reasons enough to consider alternatives for eating too much fish.

Many years ago, I was diagnosed with IBS, due to chronic inflammation and pain in my intestines. Hence, I became heavily interested in a healthy diet and the environment. A friend of mine recommended trying green algae supplements. I began to take Chlorella capsules and added Spirulina powder in my breakfast smoothie. Besides odd looks from my working colleagues, I quickly saw the first effects in the form of slight detoxification and gut cleansing.

The green smoothies also made me feeling fuller for quite some time, and kept me from craving sweets. This is a huge benefit for someone who should avoid sugar due to IBS symptoms. Green algae also reduces insulin, which is the fat-storing hormone, and our appetite for sweets. Within two weeks my body showed decreased signs of inflammation. I had less pain, less bloating, and my digestion became more regular. It impressed me and I felt like I had stumbled across something small that was very big.

I had remembered algae as a stinky, slimy study object under my microscope. In fact, they are marine-based microorganisms, which – like plants – convert light, water, and carbon dioxide into a sugar. What I didn’t know was that their concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and proteins, are so high that they are commonly referred to as superfoods. These play an important role within an integrated health approach. In fact, they had already been used by the Aztecs in the 14th century.

green algaeGreen algae are the original source of omega-3-fatty acids, which may be a surprise, as you were made to believe that they occur mainly in fish. Omega-3 is an inflammation and pain reliever. Algae store it in forms, which are easily accessible for our body, namely as Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – in case you were up for a tongue breaker.

Algae reduce oxidative stress and improve blood lipid profiles. Thus, they support the heart and liver and help combat some of the most significant threats to health in developed countries: cardiovascular disease and heart disease, as well as fatty liver disease. Overall, algae exhibit the ability to increase blood health by lowering blood cholesterol levels naturally as they are a rich source of both fucosterol and phytosterols.

Further, the supplements provided me with many important minerals, which I was lacking: iodine (increases thyroid health), magnesium (crucial for nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and energy production), potassium (increases proper functioning of heart muscles cells), and calcium (supports bone maintenance).

To reach optimal health benefits, alternative-medicine suggests consuming between 1 and 2 grams (1000 and 2000 mg) of combined EPA/DHA per day from algae, split between two doses.

The more I knew about green algae, the more I realized the potential of this green goodness from the ocean. I have reduced my fish consumption to once a week. I have also found tools to give my body everything it needs without adding additional pressure on my health or the overall health of our oceans.

Depleted fish stocks would be problematic for millions of people and would impact the complex networks of the oceans. This could eventually lead to dramatic changes in our climate. Saving the world doesn’t happen all at once. However, we all can have our share along the process.
